neep Noise Cancelling: The AI Upgrade That Makes Your Current Headset Sound $200 Better

When was the last time you were on an important business call, and despite getting things set up to the best of your abilities, someone on the other end said:

“Hey, I’m hearing a lot of background noise over there”

It only takes one barking dog, one HVAC blast, or the sounds of enthusiastic coworkers to derail a conversation. And in today’s world of remote and hybrid work, audio quality tends to equal professionalism. Sound quality matters for your image, for your reputation and for your success. And if you’re not paying attention to this easily overlooked matter, you may be a phone call away from a potentially costly mistake.

But here’s the surprising truth:
Most sound quality problems people blame on their headset, but many times aren’t the headset’s fault. The real culprit is the environment where many headsets can’t handle the noise coming from sources like coworkers, babies, family pets, office equipment, and the list goes on.

That’s where neep noise canceling software comes in.

🧩 The Problem: Business Calls Have Become Noisy, Distracted, and Unpredictable

We’ve all been there. You’re on a sales call or helping a customer and suddenly:

  • A coworker starts a conversation behind you
  • Your typing sounds becomes distracting
  • The AC, heater or a fan is blowing
  • The dog hears the mailman, or your children amp up the volume
  • And if you have echo, which isn’t uncommon to some headsets, especially if they’re not adjusted right, trouble hits a high point

Even premium headsets, $300+ models from popular brands, can’t fully eliminate this noise. They’re generally decent for what you hear, but they typically lack what your customer hears.

And that more or less gets to the heart of the issue.

Every distracting sound pulls your listener’s attention away, lowers comprehension, and chips away at the professionalism you’re trying to convey. Meanwhile, you’re thinking:

“Do I really need an expensive new headset to get better sound quality?” The answer is yes and no. Yes, in that it’s always a good idea to use a good quality headset because they give you the best chance to have a good, comfortable fit, the latest tech features, and the best available sound quality.

On the other hand, even if you’re using an average headset, you’ll find enormous value in pairing it with smart, ai noise canceling software like neep. It’s designed to enhance audio in ways your headset can’t. neep learns your voice and then isolates it from other sounds, and voices which keeps your voice front and center. neep can also remove noise from your background, and your caller’s background as well, giving everyone a better sounding call experience.

The Impact of noise is REAL!

The internet is chalked full of sources, and articles that helps to put a spotlight on this problem. Everything from how noise impacts productivity, understanding (or misunderstanding), impact on KPI’s, and even how much noise related issues cost businesses in the U.S., and around the world.

Here’s a very small sampling of the countless studies, and research that’s been done on noise in the workplace, and its effects.

From the World Economic Forum & World Green Business Council:

According to a 2015 World Green Building Council (WGBC) report, background noise can lead to as much as a 66 percent drop in productivity, while a UK study found that three in 10 employees regularly lose their concentration due to the chatter and hum of office life. That makes noise the biggest workplace distraction – more than other clear productivity drains, including social media.  Article can be found here

An article from Niche Projects:

Open plan office workers lose about 86 minutes every day due to distraction, according to Research Gate.

This is an enormous amount of time, and it’s lost time that you, as a business owner, are paying for. The causes of distraction can vary greatly, but tend to involve background noise, interruptions from other employees, and visual distraction. The good news is that it is easy to reduce this lost time through the use of partitions, or an office refurbishment.

Headset Advisor would of course recommend as a starting point, a good quality noise canceling headset, combined with neep ai noise canceling software. If the headset has a feature called ANC, or Active Noise Cancellation, it helps to filter out background noise in your environment so YOU can keep your concentration, and not become distracted by the sounds around you. A noise canceling microphone will take that same background noise, and reduce it so your callers aren’t distracted by it. So, noise elimination, as it pertains to headsets, is a two pronged approach; ANC + NC = great sounding calls for you, and those you communicate with.

Mohawk Group – Acoustic Research Study

70% of employees say that noise in the open plan environment is the number one workplace distraction, affecting satisfaction and productivity.

And, for the economic impact of noise, here’s one of many examples sited by Terrapin Bright Green

From a business standpoint, noise distraction and subsequent impaired productivity translates to measurable economic losses. On average, employee salaries and benefits account for more than 90% of a company’s operating costs per square foot.5,6,7 Conservative estimates indicate that office workers lose 21.5 minutes of productive time per day due to noise disturbance.8 Given a company of 100 employees at an average yearly compensation of $85,925, time lost due to noise distraction accounts for over $386,000 squandered annually

The point is, noise isn’t something to overlook because it’s the not so silent assassin that’s eroding productivity, worker health, and if not dealt with, costing you real money that’s putting a drag on profits.

How To Remove Background Noise 2025

If you’re like me, you probably find background noise distracting especially when you’re on important calls. Noise can not only be distracting, but it can be just plain annoying, not to mention how it can affect call quality, and worker productivity.

In order to explore ways to remove noise, it’s important to first better understand the source of noise, and how it affects you, your callers, and your calls.

So let’s take a closer look at the different types of noise; where it comes from, and how it puts a drain on productivity.

Noise Comes In Many FormsHere Are Just A Few

Office Noise. If you work in a busy office, you’ve probably experienced first hand the different noise challenges associated with working around a group of people. Noise can come from background conversations, office equipment sounds, doors closing, HVAC systems running, traffic noise and the list goes on. If you can hear the noise, you may become distracted by it, and your callers as well.

Home Office. For those who work from home, they’re not exempt from noise. Anyone who has children knows they can be distracting. And if you own a four legged friend, most will get enthusiastic if they spot a delivery truck like UPS, FedEx, Amazon or the US Postal Service. Then there’s the comforting sounds of landscape equipment such as lawn mowers and leaf blowers. The perfect touch to help close that deal, right? Of course not!

Hybrid Workers. If you’re someone who has a more nomadic style as to where you do your work, noise is all around you. If you set up shop at the local Starbucks, at the airport or train, you’re well aware of the full complement of noises going on around you. The sounds of dishes and utensils, cars, background conversations, background music, and the list continues. The bottom line is when you work remotely, you face an enormous challenge when it comes to noise.

The Impact That Noise Has On Us

frustrated woman office worker due to noise.

When you think about noise, and how it can affect you while on important calls, it doesn’t take long to conclude that its impact isn’t positive. So with that in mind, what are the specific problems caused by noise? Here are a few of them:

Causes you to lose your concentration. If you’re locked in on a conversation, and paying close attention to details, background noise can interfere with your ability to remain focused. If your focus, and concentration are negatively affected, then you’ll be less likely to accomplish your call objectives.

Distracts your callers. Like you, your callers can become distracted by the noise going on in your background. If this happens, they might miss important information, or misinterpret your message which can create problems and put important deals in jeopardy. That aside, noise can just irritate the heck out of your callers too.

Causes you to appear unprofessional. When noise finds its way into your calls, it’s easy for you to come across as unprofessional, unprepared, and even unworthy of securing a customer’s business. Noise creates an unfavorable impression that can truly derail deals. Impressions matter, and putting a lid on noise should be one of your high priorities.

Brings down worker productivity. In an era where there’s so much data, it’s easy to see who’s productive, and who’s not. These days, you need every advantage you can get, and if noise is an obstacle to being your most productive self, then doesn’t it make sense to address it?

When you get distracted by noise, and your callers get distracted by it, neither of you can perform at your best. Whether this distracts you consciously or unconsciously, noise is a problem, and it shouldn’t be ignored.

So What Can You Do To Tackle Noise?

Here are a few Things You Can Do:

Environmental

This applies to those who work in offices. Offices can be constructed using hard surface materials like glass, marble, granite and others similar materials. It can also incorporate sound absorbing materials like carpet, cubicles, or even acoustic wall and ceiling tiles.

worker installing acoustic ceiling tiles

This may be a workable solution for some, but there are challenges to this including having the required budget to install sound absorbing material. The other drawback to this approach is it won’t filter out all the noise which means nearby conversations, for example, will still be heard. So even though installing cubicles or sound absorbing material is a good idea, it isn’t the total solution.

Seek a quiet spot. Maybe you just relocate to a quiet space whenever you need to get on an important call. That could work, but what if the quiet space isn’t available, or you get an unexpected call when not in a quiet space? Bottom line, this may work in some situations, but taking this approach isn’t the best one available to you as you’ll soon see.

Hardware

collage of communication devices, headset, Airpods, conference phone and microphone

Taking this approach, you’ll likely be considering:

  • A noise canceling headset
  • A noise canceling conference phone
  • Earbuds
  • A USB Microphone and speakers

Headset. A headset that has a noise canceling microphone is a very good first step. But, keep in mind, a headset’s ability to remove noise varies greatly between model to model, and brand to brand. One thing for sure is no headset removes all background noise which means noise can still be a problem even if your headset is designed to remove it.

Noise canceling conference phone. Even though many conference phones come equipped with multiple noise canceling microphones, noise suppression, and echo cancellation, there remains some inherent shortcomings of this as your weapon against noise.

For starters, this is a handsfree, broadcast device that pushes the far end audio out of the central loudspeaker. By design, those sitting nearby are given the ability to hear, and be heard. But those who aren’t part of the call, but within hearing range of the call can also hear its contents. And if you’re dealing with sensitive information, that’s not ideal.

Like headsets, conference phones aren’t able to remove all the noise which leaves you with the problem, albeit improved, but still present.

Earbuds. Earbuds are an offshoot of headsets, and remain a popular choice for a lot of people. A lot of people use earbuds for business calls, many of which are unaware of the impact of their audio deficiencies. Generally speaking, earbuds are a poor choice for removing unwanted noise because most don’t do a good job, including popular brands like AirPods.

Microphone audio quality, combined with poor noise cancellation are good reasons to give pause to earbuds for business calls. Beyond this, most earbud style headsets lack battery strength which means they might not be suitable for the talk time you need for a typical, or busy workday.

USB microphone and speakers . This approach represents my least favorite among those listed here. So much depends on the quality of the microphone as to how you’ll sound to your callers, and how much background noise is eliminated. Beyond that uncertainty, you’re back into broadcasting the content of your calls to anyone within hearing distance, and of course unable to leave your desk. Can this work? Of course, but there is a better option, which I’ll detail now.

Software

Software noise canceling for Windows and Mac – neep

Many Windows and Mac users are looking for better noise canceling. So many of our applications today are computer based, and because of that, sound quality, and noise reduction are two things that remain highly important.

Whether you use a softphone for your voice calls, or participating in video meetings, how you sound to others, and how they sound to you matters. Of course you want to sound your best, and you certainly want your message to be heard, and understood. And you don’t want background noise to distract your callers.

graphic showing the word noise with a wood plank background
  • Noise is distracting
  • Noise annoys people
  • Noise can increase stress and anxiety
  • Noise can cause your message to get lost in the chaos
  • Noise is known to lower productivity
  • Noise can make you appear unprofessional and disorganized.

So what can you do if you use Windows or Mac operating systems, and you use applications such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom, RingCentral or any of the other popular applications for your communications, and you want to dial down the background noise?

Here are some common approaches that many take:

Get a noise canceling headset? Sure, you could do that, but there isn’t a headset made that eliminates all the noise. And because of that, noise can still find its way into your conversations leading to distractions, and misunderstandings.

Earbuds, AirPods etc. Though this is a popular headset wearing style, earbuds overall come up short in the voice audio quality, and noise elimination areas. And if that weren’t enough, most have limited talk time which can cut you off in the middle of important conversations if the battery gives out.

Conference phone. That could work. After all, conference phones,  like headsets, have audio characteristics that are designed to optimize sound quality, right? Yep. Problem is, just like a headset, conference phones won’t eliminate all the noise, not to mention other limiting factors  associated with conference phones such as limited microphone range, and call content is broadcasted to anyone within hearing distance which puts sensitive information at risk.

USB microphone & computer speakers. The least desirable option, but as devices go, it can work, although its efficiency is highly dependent on the type and quality of microphone used. For the vast majority of people who employ this option, you’ll sacrifice voice audio quality and noise reduction and like a conference phone, the content of your call will be available to anyone within hearing distance. My vote? Two thumbs down on this one.

USB Handset. Finally, you could consider plugging in a USB handset. You’d still be facing these same audio challenges, most notably with noise cancellation. And when you stop to consider the inefficiencies of holding a handset while attempting to type on your computer keyboard, I’m sure you can see the problem. And if you go down the path of cradling the handset on your shoulder, make sure your health insurance premiums are paid up because you’ll be paying a visit to your Doctor at some point.

So What Do You Do?

If this leaves you scratching your head and a bit perplexed, you may end up defaulting to one of the options listed above. It would be understandable given the absence of a known solution. That is until now, because there is an affordable, simple solution that works with any audio device, and it will enhance sound quality, and dramatically reduce background noise. This is a new software solution called:

How To Setup neep With RingCentral For More Noise Cancellation

Elevate your RingCentral experience and say goodbye to distracting background noise!

This blog will explore how neep, a powerful noise cancellation software, seamlessly integrates with your RingCentral voice and video applications to give you crystal-clear communication. And, it will give you a step-by-step guide on how to get started using neep, and how to set it up.

Why neep for RingCentral?

While RingCentral delivers exceptional audio quality, external factors like your microphone can impact your sound. Even the best headsets or audio devices have limitations:

  • Partial Noise Cancellation: Headsets and conference phones, for example, vary in their noise canceling abilities, and these devices can’t eliminate all the background noise which means you and your callers are probably going to hear it. This can lead to distractions, frustration, decreased productivity, confidentiality issues as well as a compromised image.
  • Limited Functionality: Headsets don’t address your caller’s background noise, and because of this, you can easily get distracted by their noise. Additionally, typical audio devices are incapable of isolating and enhancing the sound of your voice which can lead to inconsistencies in how you come across to your callers.

For these, and other reasons, neep is the noise canceling solution you’ve been looking for.

neep Bridges The Gap:

neep noise cancellation software complements your existing audio devices (headsets, conference phones etc) to provide a superior RingCentral experience. Where your audio device leaves off, is where neep picks up.

Here’s how to set up neep when using RingCentral:

1. Download and Configure neep:

  • Visit neep.com and download the software.
  • Within RingCentral, navigate to “Settings” -> “Audio.”
  • Set the “Microphone” and “Speaker” to “neep microphone” and “neep speaker.”

2. Open and Configure neep App:

  • Launch neep from the taskbar up arrow and click on the purple “n” icon.
  • Select your audio device (headset, conference phone, or audio device you’re using) in the “Microphone” and “Speaker” drop-down menus.
  • Set “Microphone” to “On” and “Speaker” to “Off” (neep will suppress sounds like podcasts, music, movies etc, so you’ll want this off. Later, you can return here to change it to on, if you’re on a call with someone who has noise going on in their background).

3. Register Your Voice and Optimize Settings:

  • Follow the prompts to register your voice within neep.
  • When done registering your voice, make sure “Register your voice” is on and “Enhanced Background noise cancellation” is checked.
  • Click the settings icon (gear symbol) and under “General,” and verify the following:
    • Launch at system startup is checked
    • Echo cancellation is checked
    • HD Voice is checked
    • Microphone and Speaker noise reduction levels are both set to 100%
    • Click on “Premium Noise Canceling Settings” making sure that “Enhanced noise cancellation” is checked.

4. Test and Use neep:

  • Perform a test call within the neep app to experience the difference in audio quality with neep on, and off.
  • When making a RingCentral call, verify “neep microphone” and “neep speaker” are both displayed.
  • Click “Join audio by computer” to begin your clear and professional RingCentral call.

From Frustration to Focus: How neep Software Conquers Office Noise

Noise is all around us. We face noise at every turn throughout our day whether it’s at the office, in our cars, or at home. Noise is inescapable.

But when noise interferes with our ability to efficiently communicate when at work, noise takes on a more menacing, and impactful issue for us to contend with. If the noise around you gets in the way of you having a good, clear and productive conversation, it can have a very negative impact on your ability to get things done. Customers get distracted, attention shifts, and your message gets lost in the noise.

Noise is known to be:

  • Highly distractive
  • Annoying
  • A leading cause of lowered worker productivity
  • One huge reason why your message isn’t being heard

Noise comes in a variety of sizes, and flavors.

If you work from home, you’re probably very aware of how the sounds of children and pets can impact your productivity, and that cringe feeling when those sounds amplify

And, for those who work in a busy office, especially those collaborative, open offices, noise can be a huge distraction, and an challenge to try to overcome.

The hybrid worker doesn’t escape the clutches of noise either, because that stopover at the coffee shop is chalked full of noise thanks to all those caffeine deprived patrons enjoying their favorite brew.

Yes, noise comes from a variety of sources, and the one thing they all have in common is they all need to be silenced. But that’s easier said than done. At least I know it is in my case, because no matter what I say or do, my stubborn four legged Schnauzer will not be silenced at the mere sight or sound of UPS, FedEx, Amazon or the U.S. Postal Service vehicle. I’ve learned that it’s a waste of time, and my breath to get her to stop the barking. And that’s just one example. Try telling your coworkers, or those coffee patrons I mentioned a moment ago to please be quiet. No doubt that would be met with laughter or curious looks than silence. After all, you were joking, right? Well, one thing I can tell you is that your customers aren’t laughing at all your noise.

Noise is the problem, so what can you do to fight back?

There are a number of traditional approaches, and one that you may not have heard about. I’ll tell you about both.

1. Relocate to a quiet space

You can uproot yourself and relocate to a quiet space in your home or office. But that’s less than ideal because you may need things at your desk which you won’t have access to. Or, your quiet space may not be comfortable enough for a long meeting, or not conveniently located near the coffee machine and/or bathroom.

Whatever inconvenience you may experience, relocating yourself to a quiet corner may not be the perfect solution to your noise problem, and it doesn’t address noise for those unable to relocate.

2. Use Sound Absorbing materials

Some businesses tackle the problem of noise by installing sound absorbing materials throughout the office. This could include things such as sound absorbing ceiling tiles, or wall panels. First, not all businesses are willing to do this, and secondly, this can get expensive in a hurry. So for many businesses, this doesn’t really represent a viable solution.

3. Install Partitions or cubicles

Installing partitions or cubicles may help to remove or isolate some of the direct, line of sight type noise, but it’s not the solution that will eliminate noise to the extent you need. You’ll still experience distracting noise that leaks out of these confined areas, and collectively, that can be enough to cause you to keep searching for a solution.

4. Purchase Noise canceling headphones

One of the most common approaches to solving the noise in the workplace problem is to buy headsets that are noise canceling. And though that’s a great idea, and certainly a help, it’s not the best solution either. Here’s why:

  1. Some headsets do not come with a noise canceling microphone, and it isn’t always obvious when reading over the product information. So if you aren’t 100% sure, you may end up with headsets that don’t remove background noise at all. In the end, you will not have accomplished your goal.
  2. Noise canceling headsets vary in their ability to remove noise. This makes it very challenging for the buyer because he/she won’t know for sure if the headset will remove the noise in their environment. The very best way to determine that is to try the headset out before deciding to purchase. If your vendor won’t allow you to try before you buy, then my advice is to find a new vendor that will.

At Headset Advisor, we test hundreds of wired and wireless headsets. Over the decades of doing this, we’ve come to understand that some headsets do a much better job at removing background noise over others. So again, if removing noise is your biggest concern, then try before you buy. This way, you’ll know in advance how well your headset will perform in your exact working environment. No surprises, and no having to go through the return process.

So if relocating, installing sound absorbing materials, using partitions,/cubicles and noise canceling headsets can’t get the job done, what will? Thankfully, there is a solution.

neep noise canceling software

Yes, neep is a funny name, but there’s nothing funny about how well it tackles the most challenging noises you face every day. In that sense, neep is all business.

  • neep crushes the sounds of coworker chatter
  • neep silences the sounds of babies crying and children noises so you your message is heard.
  • neep gets your dog to behave (well, maybe not, but at least your callers won’t hear any barking)
  • And neep lets the coffee crowd do whatever they like because neep eliminates the background sound. So you’re free to break out your laptop and have an important business call.

To help give you a better sense of how well neep works to silence noise, here are a couple of video clips that help to illustrate how well this software works.

Work from home and have barking dog challenges? Have a listen to this.

Maybe you work from home and have young children. Listen to how well neep removes the sounds of a crying baby.

neep will work to silence all kinds of noise. So whatever noise you’re wrestling with (noisy coworkers, Call Center chatter, open office sounds, freeway noise etc) let neep give you crystal clear calls without all the distractions, and frustrations.

neep is a simple download that works to silence background noise whenever you’re on computer based voice or video calls, and it works with whatever microphone and speaker you’re now using. so no need to buy any hardware to take advantage of the many benefits that neep provides.

neep isn’t made for use on mobile phones or tablets, but if you’re on a Microsoft Teams call, or any of the other popular applications for voice and video, rest assured you’ll have a far better calling experience when using neep noise canceling software.

One of the neep features that help you to have better calls, besides the amazing noise reduction, is voice recognition and isolation. The software allows you to record an audio sample of your voice, which the software then remembers, and going forward, isolates your voice from other voices. Your callers hear you, and not those in your background talking about what they did over the weekend. Pretty smart wouldn’t you say?

If you’re wondering what operating systems neep works with, here’s the 411 on that;

  • Windows 10 or above
  • Mac 10.15 Catalina minimum supported
  • Linux Ubuntu 20.04 – Debian 10 – Fedora 37

Note: minimum 4 GB of RAM, 8 GB recommended

neep not only silences your background, but it also silences your caller’s background as well. So you both are treated to a noise free calling experience. That’s something even the best noise canceling headphones can’t do.

And if you have recorded meetings, or if you’re a content creator who produces Podcasts for example, neep can clean up your audio files to give you awesome sound without the need to use third party audio software. You can even have some fun through the neep voice changer feature that allows you to modify your voice for special effects. neep lets you unleash your inner creativity.

Even though neep is much more than a one trick pony, it’s claim to fame is how well it removes background noise. And according to feedback from our customers, noise is one of their biggest challenges.

So if noise is your problem, neep is your answer.

But don’t take my word for it, why not find out for yourself by trying neep free for 7 days. Take it for a test drive, and then decide if neep is right for you. The price is right, and the only thing you stand to lose is some unwanted, distracting noise and a few minutes of your time.

Clear and Present Danger: Unraveling the Risks of Unchecked Office Noise

In the typical office workspace, the issue of distracting background noise often goes underestimated, and in many cases, not given its proper credit for how it impacts workers health, well-being and overall productivity.

From the constant sounds of office machines to the audible interactions of coworkers, the repercussions of unchecked office noise can reverberate throughout the professional landscape, impacting workers in different ways. This blog aims to put a light on this subject, pointing out the risks associated with leaving office noise unaddressed, and how it contributes to a less-than-ideal work environment.

The Annoyance Factor

Most office workers would agree that noise, quite simply, is annoying. It’s the leading cause of worker dissatisfaction in the workplace. It disrupts concentration, interrupts focus, and creates a backdrop to an otherwise noise free, peaceful work environment. From the regular ringing of phones to the clicking sounds of keyboards, the constant presence of office ambient noise can become irritating to even the most patient of workers.

Communication Challenges

The frustrations extend beyond annoyance, because it can disrupt your communication. Because we live in an era where virtual meetings, softphone and video calls are the norm, background noise becomes a disruptive force on both ends of the conversation. From  the constant sounds of voices, dog barking, or all the other noises we deal with regularly, unchecked noise introduces a layer of frustration that impedes effective communication. And when you have goals that you’re wanting to accomplish on your calls, noise works against them.

Here’s a short article that talks about office noise, and how it impacts communication.

Impacts on Health and Productivity

The consequences of unaddressed office noise also finds its way into the realms of physical and mental health. Studies have linked prolonged exposure to noise with increased stress levels, heightened blood pressure, and decreased overall well-being. In a workplace that fails to address noise concerns, the toll on employee health is an undeniable risk. Managers are always interested to better understand worker dissatisfaction, and noise is one of the most overlooked areas.

Background noise also takes a toll on worker productivity. Employees find it challenging to maintain focus, leading to increased errors, missed deadlines, and a general decline in overall output. The detrimental impact on productivity is a silent but significant risk that businesses cannot afford to overlook.

Open Offices and Beyond

Open office designs, often celebrated for their collaborative potential, ironically contribute to the noise epidemic. The lack of physical barriers exacerbates sound transmission, creating an environment where noise freely flows through the workspace. However, the risks associated with unchecked noise extend beyond the confines of open offices.

For remote workers, the challenges of ambient noise take on new forms. Barking dogs, household commotion, and other domestic sounds introduce a layer of complexity to remote work. Even those who opt to work from the local coffee shop find themselves grappling with noise-related hurdles. There’s no denying that noise is a problem, and it’s something that’s very hard to escape from.
